Freshcare Food Safety and Quality is the fresh produce industry’s own on-farm assurance program, meeting the needs of Australian growers in fulfilling both domestic and international market requirements.
Freshcare’s practical approach to helping growers and packers assure customers that their produce is safe to eat and sustainably grown has seen thousands of fresh produce businesses adopt the Freshcare program since its launch in July 2000.
Freshcare is Australia’s largest on-farm assurance program and exciting new developments, including benchmarking to the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), will ensure the program continues to grow.

In 2012 Horticulture Australia Ltd (now Horticulture Innovation Australia) initiated a project to harmonise food safety certification requirements for the major retailers in Australia.
The result of this project is the Harmonised Australian Retailer Produce Scheme (HARPS).
The HARPS project has been funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia Ltd using across-industry levies and funds from the Australian Government.
HACCP is an internationally recognised method of identifying and managing risk and, when central to an active food safety programme, can provide vendors, the public and government sector bodies with a high degree of comfort that food safety is being taken seriously and is well managed.
The concept is not new however. Researchers and suppliers to the NASA space programme developed the system to avoid the potentially disastrous consequences of failure above the earth’s atmosphere.
Today, many of the world’s best manufacturers and vendors use the system as a basis for their quality management programs.

Today’s consumers are more educated about the food they’re providing their families and requiring more information about food quality. One link in the food chain does not get rattled without it affecting the next link. Customers expect more from their retailers and food service providers, who in turn expect more from their suppliers.
Heightened consumer demand for increased food safety assurances moves down the chain with retailers and service providers asking suppliers to provide verifiable proof that robust food safety control systems have been effectively implemented. These systems must have been properly validated and show evidence of continuous monitoring procedures. This is where the Safe Quality Food (SQF) Program comes in.
